Rain stop play , for some

Wednesday 1st May 2019

1st day of the month started bright for the dozen or so volunteers who attended today , but by lunch time the predicted rain arrived putting a dampener on a few jobs.

Brian had hoped to finish painting and then refix the Broadway sign at the bottom of the drive.

But after lunch the paint hadn't dried sufficiency so it went back into the portakabin to wait for a dryer day.

No ( proper ) painters today but on Monday the two Mikes finished off the last of the first coatings of the corrugated sheets.

Another none proper painter  was seen up on the stairs giving the recently fitted  Dagger Boards a coat of undercoat , Pete enjoying the view.

The car park side shown just before the rain started !

Below him Rod ,Terry and the team had finished the pavement up to wall.

Before then moving over the far side of the drive way. An area needs to made ready for a concrete slab to be laid so we can site our waste bins, maybe 2 or 3 need to be stored away from the station building.

Below Rod is compacting the area with our old vibrating compactor .

Dave had finished off two of the poster frames and  then Peter and Dave installed the posters in the Restaurant .Before then carrying on with the next two.

Else where Clive give the fence by the mess hut and Portakabin another lick of fence life.

And  Pat vanished off into the distance to reduce the height of the ever growing vegetation . ( even the zoom on my camera couldn't pick him out )

  2. The interior photo of the tearoom - where is the Edwardian picture rail like Toddington and why aren't these excellent posters hung in the traditional way, from the rail ???

  3. Hi Dave and Vic,
Thanks for publishing my comments on the picture rail. I don't want to appear critical in any way, as the Broadway station is a monumental achievement.
As such, I have offered to pay for the material, the carpentry to copy the Toddington profiles ( that will cost) and the fixing within the tearoom. You have a brilliant craftsman in Neal.
I understand the objection is that a rail, hooks and wire will collect dust, and health and safety on suspended posters.
The problem is, the room has a rather "corridor " design and a rail with the white ceiling lowered to rail level will give you a more pleasing perspective. All our rooms in our Edwardian cottage have picture rails and they do collect dust. However, the traditional appearance is great with brass hooks and picture wire. Why don't you retain the screw fittings to the wall but mount hooks and wire as well.
A couple of feather dusters thrown in to the package ??
Please consider these suggestions, it will improve the atmosphere.

  4. My wife and I had T and cake in the Refreshment Room twice over the weekend.
It was fantastic to actually sit in the room that I have been following the construction of since around 2004 when I first read the news paper reports that the railway had got planning permission to re-build the line and station.
Every year since we have stayed at the caravan and motor home site opposite and have walked up to see how things have been progressing also visiting on the open evenings before the station was built.
Everybody who helped in the building and those who now operate the station need a medal as it’s a fantastic achievement and the T and cake was lovely.
I do feel a picture rail would finish the room but if it cannot be done then fine I will be back either later this year or next year.
    Regards to all.

  5. The tearoom is proving such an asset to the GWSR so lets publicise it more as its new and so attractive with the Edwardian theme , worth telling the Heritage Raiway Magazines about for a specific article as SVR have done at Bridgnorth.john M.
