Will it ever stop Raining !

Wednesday 27th November 2019

Thank goodness we have a descent canopy on the station and containers to hide ( work ) in !
Because Monday it rained most of the day and Wednesday it rained on and off all day.

But as I said  we have a large canopy where we could work in the dry , Mike S gave some of the Benches a final top coat . In the rush to get them on the platform a year ago they never had the third coat applied , a slight wipe and rub dawn and they were finished.

But having finished the 3 , bits for a new bench had then appeared, Dave having rounded off the edges gave them to Mike who then primed and undercoated.

Back in the dry of the Container , Dave had made 4 off Leaflet holders , his mission to rid the station of the plastic versions.
Also the Hayles Abbey Halt had been flipped over and the last backing coat of paint applied.

Elsewhere Ian our new volunteer was helping John S with the treating of the wood for the footbridge stairs,  ( little does he know what he has let himself in for )

Wednesday was overcast dull and with heavy showers, so lets all get undercover.

Peter Q did a bit of touching up, " of the sign ", and then varnished Daves new Leaflet Holders.

A Dave made yet another Leaflet / Pamphlet for the some , it was a bit bigger than normal , its was for the shop  to get the old holders off their table.

Pete duly varnished it and later Dave hung it on the shop wall .

Meanwhile under the canopy , first Clive was giving the benches a coat of preservative.

And Mike gave the bench wood an undercoat then vanished.

Only to reappear at the end of the day , flip them over and do the other side !

Meanwhile Ian was on his own with a large pile of wood.

Treat once move , treat twice move , treat three time move back, and that is just the preservative .
Layers of Primers and undercoats come next .
At least he was dry.

And Finally.

It is with regret and sorrow that we announce the passing of one our volunteers, Graham Dykes.
Graham and his team of painters had worked on the Station for many years, his skill and advice will sadly be missed by all who knew and worked with him.

Just a few photos of Graham working around the station.

4 Degrees

Monday 18th November

It was a cold start to the day. Nine volunteers at Broadway Station today Dave in the woodwork shop, Vic in the walled garden, Tony and Bob in for meetings. Jo was working on another bench, Neal up on the footbridge, two Johns and Brian came in for one of the meetings.

Five barrow loads were transported to the bonfire.

Cup of tea time and a warm up.

Wednesday 20th November

It was a bit warmer today with 10 volunteers in to do the usual. Pine needle clearance for one team, garden clearance for another. Checking lamp posts for one and bridge work for another.

Tony and the Blower.

The rest of the team clearing up the drive, drains and guttering.

Clive continuing with the fence protection.

Chris assisted Vic with the walled garden clearance which all went to the bonfire.

Mike was not leaning on the lamp post he was up it.

Preparing for Christmas a tree had arrived. This was seen looking through the window in the station cafe.

John was sorting out paint for the footbridge and a side panel had been added.

Waiting for Paint to Dry

Wednesday 13th November 2019

2 on Monday and 6 On Wednesday , numbers are dwindling on the volunteers who turn up, must be the Weather , only the few brave the cold winds and rain.

Monday saw Dave extend the power to the old paint store Portakabin, this is where Peter K will be constructing the spear fencing panels in the near future.
Afterwards he went back to the workshop Portakabin to paint the top capping of the Hayles Abbey Halt Board.

Wednesday was a cold and windy day so everybody found a job inside except for Clive who had a go at treating the fence going up the drive. its going to be one of those " Forth Rail Bridge jobs "

The one bench we couldn't put undercover ( its bolted down ) was wrapped up for the winter.

The letters on the board were screwed on by Peter Q and Dave. Screw holes filed and then rubbed down, parts of the board were still wet from Monday so we have left it for another week .

Peter K and Tony cleared the remaining  " Stuff " out of  Portakabin 3 and then started to put together the jig for spear fencing.

Peter Q and Brian did a bit of housekeeping around the old pile of stair parts .

The old stairs treads were neatly put into piles and then covered by the sheet of flooring. To their dismay Neal turned up and said " could I have the one at the bottom " ten minutes later it was dug out and the pile then reinstated.

And that was it for another week , there are other jobs to be done but  a bit more heat ( for painting ) would be nice and having no a no rain forecast in the next couple of days ( for other jobs ) would also be nice.

A Tidy Up Day

Wednesday 6th November

On Saturday Peter Q donned his England waistcoat wishing the rugby team good luck. Well everyone knows the result.

Vic was in the walled garden sorting out the dead plants and cutting back. So our bonfire was a day late, Clive adding bits and pieces that were no longer required.

Ray was adding more paint to Hayles Abbey Halt running in board.

We had a large number of GWSR volunteers at Broadway today as can be seen by the number of cars.

P/Way team was identifying the track in the station and recording the information.

Neal was up on the bridge, fixing the boards across the bridge span.

The platform furniture and display items have been stacked under the canopy until the station reopens on Boxing Day.

Fencing for the refuse bins storage area has arrived and will be fixed around the concrete pad.

Julie was in the FOBS goods shed doing a stock check. We currently do not require any more items till next March when the railway reopens to traffic.

Peter K our metal fabricator with help from his friends was sorting out the paint store.
This container was now going to be used for welding and manufacture of spear fencing over the Winter shut down period.
