Pottering On

Week Commencing 23rd August 2021

A good couple days weather wise for volunteering not too hot , no rain on the horizon so the plants have to be watered .

Firstly two pictures from last week of what the Broadway Wednesday gang had achieved , digging out and preparing the area at the bottom of the ramp on platform 1 , and finishing off the slabbing  by the canopy support upright.

Meanwhile on Monday.

Pat was having trouble with the Flymo.

Brian was at the top of the embankment clearing what are now sizable shrub's.

Peter Q was at the bottom tending to his various shrubs, whilst Vic gave the car park a quick sweep.

Due to the lack of paint Mike was unable to carry on with the painting of the spear fencing , but he did  manage to find an old pot of grey paint , which he applied to the door of one of the electrical boxes to freshened it up.

Elsewhere a bit of Maintance.
Dave and Ian repaired one of the Notice boards ( broken hinges )

And refurbished Doreen's memorial plaque ( rotted post and wooden surround )

Later returned to the small garden , in which was then being weeded by Vic.

Wednesday

Some strange going ons with the Wednesday seen pushing the various trolleys up and down the platform.

They were trying to find a suitable item to stop people wandering underneath the footbridge stairs !

By the end of the day they had finished the edging at the end of platform 1 ramp,

Pat was attacking the undergrowth on platform 2.

Peter Q had found a nice spot for a sit down.

Dave after repairing the Workbench , started the construction of a new A board for the shop.

Locos of the day were  " Dinmore Manor " and  " Foremarke Hall "

Thursday 19 August 2021

It will brighten up eventually

 Week commencing 16th August 2021

A very dull day greeted the volunteers on Monday its supposed to be summer !

Peter and Dave made there way into the café to finish what they had started last week . A new work top between the front and rear counter by the wall.

Job completed , coffee machine returned to its rightful position for now !

Then it was back to gardening in its various forms

Vic was in the border weeding

Pat with the flymo

Brian and Peter clearing and weeding on the embankment

And Ian wheeling it all back to the Bonfire area.

On the bridge Neal was close to finishing the paneling on the footbridge stairs , we did hang around to see the last one go in , but !

Wednesday saw that he in fact had finished it and the nails holes had been filled and painted.

Wednesday

Still overcast and murky. but a change by the end of the day

It was PTS ( Personal Track Safety ) examination day , just to make sure we are all aware of the rules and regulations that allow us to work near the track .

Before his test Peter Q was seen attacking a dead tree behind platform 1

Clive was using up the last of the light stone undercoat on a couple of spear fences.

Dave had finished the new leaflet holder , its ready to be sign written by Alex ,then a coat of varnish if we can decide on a colour !

Dave and Ian did more work on the Dagger boards.

Their was more going on around the station but the pictures failed to come out .

This included Rod, Terry Keith and Paul finishing off the slab around the canopy post, they then went on to the end of the platform to tidy off at the bottom of the ramp.

Locos on the trains today,

Foremarke Hall

Dinmore Manor

And the big blue diesel , in the sunshine at last !

Five plus Four

Monday 9th August

There were 5 on the Maintenance team and 4 Bridge builders..

Pat and Ian sorted out the cement mixers to make sure they were serviceable.

Vic and Brian were on garden and embankment clearance.

This was Vic's third barrow load.

Pat went off North to do some strimming. I'm sure he's up there some where.

Ian set to smoothing out the piles of sand that was brought in last week.

Mike was hiding in a container. Putting a protective coat on another spear fence panel.

The four on the Footbridge were Neal, Jo, John and new boy Pat. More wood going up the stairs.

Wednesday

Dave and Peter Q were back and Vic returned to his Station duties .

Peter and Dave looked at a small job in the counter area of the Cafe , started it , measured it, cut it but ran out of time as the Cafe Staff started to filter in for another day . It will have to wait till next Monday.

Peter went back to the bottom of the drive to tend to his plants and Dave went back to his construction.

But it was a day for the painters !

Just 3 of them but they seamed to be everywhere.

Mike and Clive were on the spear fencing.

Then Mike and Ian were rubbing down the Station gate .

Clive then was on undercoating one of the newer spear fencing

Ian was fixing a new wheel on one of the wheelbarrows before helping Dave construct a new leaflet holder for the station

A not quite ready leaflet holder , just making sure everything fitted. After its been glued and screwed it will be given to Alex in Carriage and Wagon for sign writing then Jo will apply the coats varnish  .

Sorry I forgot to mention our away team who headed back down to Toddington to do a bit of block ,  path way repairing.

Two well turned out Locomotives were on duty today in the shape of " Foremarke Hall " and on the second train " Dinmore Manor "

A Double Header

Sunday 1st August

As it was the Pink Timetable it was Steam and Diesel on the trains. It was very pleasurable to have two Class 47s on the train arriving at Broadway Station.

The friends of Broadway Summer news letter.

Monday

Monday saw the usual suspects ( volunteers ) attending , weather okay, ish for a change.

First a bit of shifting , a late delivery last Wednesday of more slabs were left by the Footbridge stairs  , they needed to be moved to the storage area.

Brian and Ian had a few hours on the job.

A bit of fixing and strengthening of Station Cafe Open sign was also needed.

Vic was removing dead branches .
Pat was behind Platform 1 .

Dave was doing slots on the dagger boards

This is what volunteering is all about . Brian had been clearing an area at the bottom of the drive embankment , Ian taking the rubbish and spoils away , but every so often its time for a chat .

Wednesday

What a difference a couple of days have been on the footbridge stairs .

The Malvern side had been completed.

With no noticeable wind and no outlook of rain today it was decided to light the bonfire. maybe it wasnt a good idea as some of the vegetation was still wet at it took a while to get going.

Pat was giving the drive way grass a trim , before heading away from the public to the far reaches of the station.

Peter Q was tending to the path way .

" P and O " was on the first train of the day.

The Wednesday crew brought more slabs and a bit of old wood which headed to the fire , it did go a lot better after .

" Foremarke Hall " pulled the second train of the day.

Ian gave the spear fencing a first coat before helping Dave .

 More slab moving !
