Scorcio

Week commencing 19th  July 2021

Freedom day came and went but the weather was still a bit " Scorcio " as they said on the Fast Show Sketch. It was a case of lets see what we could do before it got too hot.

But it wasn't too hot to do the white lines for the Station car park . Tony on the heat gun , Dave Mike and Ian were on measuring and then the placement of the lines . Sorry I was so busy placing the lines I forgot to take a picture of the area after but you probably get the gist of what a car park looks like.

We then with the left overs bits made up some small triangles and placed them on the speed humps .

Brian was again on the mower , grass beginning to turn a bit brown in places , whilst on bank behind platform 1 Pat was hacking through the undergrowth.

By lunchtime most had had enough by 2 o clock we had all departed .

Wednesday 

Weather just as hot , again it was a case of doing something until it got unbearable. 

Peter Q was brushing up down the drive in the semi shade

Whilst a visit from a small team construction and maintenance , made use of the heat gun to repair a hole in the tarmac at the bottom of the drive.

  Pat had moved over to the end of Platform 2 , he was hoping to clear a line up to the signal before it got too hot , but it is hard work and the heat got the better of him.

Somebody who looked like the sun wasn't having an effect on was Clive , merrily painting the spear fencing !

Down by the workshop in the dappled shade Dave was putting the holes in the dagger boards , the sun eventually cleared the trees and enough was enough.

 

In fact Clive and Dave were the last to leave , they too succumbed to the temperatures. Leaving Julie manning the shop.

The people with the least envious jobs today and this week are the crews of the Locomotives on duty.

Slabs arrive

Week commencing 12th July 2021

Monday saw a decent turn out at the station , weather was good , talk about the football was indifferent , and per usual there was plenty to do.

 Vic was in the shade weeding the drive garden.

Pat was high on the platform 2 side.

Peter Q was doing what he has been doing for the last few weeks  , brushing up the endless supply of cones ,weeding,  watering and keeping an eye on his plants.

 Brian was lower down strimming around the sign.

 Pat eventually hit the bottom of the bank and virtually disappeared into the undergrowth.

Elsewhere Dave was marking out the daggerboards reading for cutting.

Wednesday 

The Main job of the day was the arrival of the Slabs from Toddington . The flat bed arrived middish morning with 20 off 3 * 2 paving slabs which had been rescued from the old Garden center . Then it was all available hands to the sack trucks , to put them into storage at the bottom of platform 2.

Three times it went away only to return with another 20 each time , the temperature had climbed and the volunteers grew weary by the end of the day. But a job well done.

Painters were out in force on the spear fencing.

Elsewhere Dave put the repaired clock back in the Cafe (  minute Hand had to be rebuilt and put back on ) Pat carried on in the undergrowth .

Start of something different !

 Week commencing 5th July 2021

We are still a few volunteers down due to the pre school holiday season for us pensioners , but a much better turn out compared to last week.

First job on the cards for Dave and Ian was to fit the small bit of spear fencing between the gate post and the start of the slope.

Pat back of his holiday started where he left off , heavy strimming behind platform 2.

 And now for something different a request for us to start making the dagger boards for the canopy extension.

there could be a possibility of the extension being erected after the Winter running in January , so everything will have to be ready for fitting in the few weeks we are closed down.

Dave , Brian and Ian started by cutting the tongue and groove boards to the correct length.

Dave applied the pointy bits and then the required hole , Brian then cut the slot.

8 done , but then nobody could remember the exact amount  we had to do!

 Mike was applying red oxide on one of the newly constructed panels

 

 

Then he did a bit cob web removing with his extended feather duster.

Wednesday 

Clive and Ian painted more panels , whilst Peter K returned to his Portakabin to construct more Panels.

Young David was down the drive picking up yet more cones and debris . 

Tony was on the mower  keeping the grass tidy .

Pat was back with the strimmer on Platform 2 

Dave was on his own but managed to cut another 35 dagger boards , just needs the hole and slot cut.

The Broadway away team of Rod , Keith and Ian were down at Toddington  recovering paving slabs, from the old Garden Centre.

82  slabs that will be used on the platform 2 we recovered and there will more to come next week.

There was sad news today that Steve Bucknall had passed away . Steve had been a volunteer on Permanent way before joining the Broadway Group in its early years, later he was a familiar face helping in the Broadway Shop, below Steve on the dumper.

What a Difference a Day make

 Week Commencing 28th June 2021

Forget Monday , weather wasn't worth getting out of bed for it seams for the most. First there was me , then Ian turned up , then Mike who said it was too wet to paint , he did a bit in the Kitchen and then went home. Then Viv turned up , at least you can do a bit of gardening in the rain.

So that's what he and Ian did , a bit of gardening.

Is marvelous what a few plants can do around the sign at the bottom of the drive.

Vic and Ian look happy with their work.

By lunch time Vic had gone, I soon followed having an afternoon  engagement , that left Ian keeping Neal company who was working on the foot bridge.

Tuesday

Broadway Station had a visitor here are a few pictures, there are lots more on Facebook.

One of the local bus companies has had a wrap.

Wednesday much better weather and a much better turn out. a complete opposite to Monday.

Myself and the the other Dave were about with the brushes giving the forgotten areas a tidy up.

Around the new canopy extension post there was a lot of activity . Rod ,Terry , Keith and Ian were reinstalling the slabs around the posts

Platform side 

Car park side needed a bit more work as new edging slabs had to be cut , but looked good after they had finished.

It was a two train day today, the trains pulled today were by Foremarke Hall and Dinmore Manor. Both trains were reasonably full , signs of things returning to normality ?

 Saturday 26th June

 It's Wales v Denmark today so First train in supported the Red Dragon.

Vic was on Station Assistant duties today. We were very busy with passengers, please pre-book your tickets if wishing to travel from Broadway.
